I used up the last couple of pages in two sketchbooks yesterday, and because I haven’t posted anything on WordPress since October I need to share some drawings. Yes, TWO sketchbooks.

This was my drawing for Inktober Day 26: Squeak. My inspiration was the R.O.U.S.es in the Princess Bride.
“Rodents Of Unusual Size? I don’t think they exist.”
I have mixed feelings about my Inktober efforts. On one hand I am disappointed that I didn’t get all of the days done. On the other hand I don’t think I’ve ever done 20 blog posts in one month (possibly even 2!) and some of the drawings I’m really pleased with. I have preliminary pencil sketches done for a few of the days that I missed. Two of them I particularly like and am thinking of completing, even though Inktober is over. Then I will call it done.
So… November. I have missed woodcut printmaking and have two prints I want to complete this month. More drawings, more Urban Sketching. That’s the plan.

Day 13 of the Inktober drawing challenge is here and the prompt is “teeming”. This scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom certainly fits the bill, though the creepy crawlies are hidden in darkness and merely suggested by the crunching sound.
Short Round: “It feels like I step on fortune cookies.”
Jones: “It’s not fortune cookies…” Read More

The Inktober day 10 prompt was “gigantic”, so I just had to do Andre the Giant in The Princess Bride. If you haven’t guessed already it is my favorite film.
This is a super quick sketch on a page with a couple other loose scribbles that weren’t quite working out. They were meant to be preliminary sketches but ended up being all I got done for Inktober yesterday. I like the way the page looks because it shows a little bit of process.
I’m a little behind as I still haven’t finished my drawing for the ninth. No worries. I will get it done.

Today I continued Inktober with another Princess Bride fan art piece. The prompt today was “crooked” and Vizzini is definitely crooked.
Vizzini: “We are but three lost circus performers. Is there a village nearby?”
Buttercup: “There is nothing nearby. Not for miles.”
Vizzini: “Then there will be no one to hear you scream.”
My approach here was to use a very light, warm gray to sketch the shapes in loosely at first, and refining and defining later in darker grays. I stared at Vizzini’s jacket for a long time trying to figure out how to render it without losing my mind. I never realized how fancy that dude’s costume is! Something an art teacher said a long time ago came to mind: “indicate, don’t state”. So that’s what I went for; an indication of embroidery.
So there! I’m caught up. Tomorrow’s prompt is “screech”. Screech could be a synonym of shriek- that’s what I’m going to run with. Can you guess what I might draw?

I fell behind a day with the WordPress posts, but I kept up with the drawings and Instagram. The prompt for Inktober day 7 was “shy”. Yes, I had to go Kajagoogoo with it! I messed around with a dip pen and ink spatter this time, just to switch things up a bit. I used some masking fluid for the lettering before getting messy with the spatter. The masking fluid and wetter inks don’t play nice with the paper in this book. It shreds the surface if I’m not super careful. I’ll have to switch papers if I do more with dip pens or washes or masking. No biggie.
Is the song stuck in your head now? You’re welcome.

The prompt for Day 6 of Inktober is “sword”. I returned to the Princess Bride for inspiration today, drawing Inigo showing “The man in black” the sword his father made. Faber Castell PITT pens in a Plumchester sketchbook.

Inktober Day 5! The prompt today is “long”. I chose not to draw something that is literally long and instead worked from the film Rumblefish. Tom Waits plays Benny, the proprietor of a pool hall where Rusty James and his friends hang out. Rusty James is sitting at the window table lost in thought.
Benny: What’s the matter with you? I ain’t never seen you sit still so long.
Rusty James: How do you know when someone’s crazy?
Benny: Well, you don’t always. It depends on how many people think they’re crazy.

Day 4 of the Inktober drawing challenge is here and the prompt is “underwater”. I waited to see what the people at Sktchy would come up with and I used one of the source photos they suggested for inspiration. This is done with my trusty Faber Castell PITT pens in a Plumchester sketchbook.
