Ink, 8″ x 10″

Here is my last Inktober drawing.  The source image I worked from has the skulls up close on the right but nothing in the background.  To give some context to the skulls I made the background a wall of bones, working from ossuary pictures on the internet.  Ossuaries are weird.  Definition: a container or room into which bones of dead people are placed.  Freaky stuff.

Wall of Inktober Drawings

I ran out of steam with the Inktober drawings last week and ended up 4 short of my goal.  But looking at this wall I’m happy with the work.  I pushed myself to try some new things, worked larger and brought it out of the sketchbooks.  I like seeing them all together like this.

This was yesterday’s Inktober drawing.  I didn’t finish in time but I gave myself a pass because it was my birthday.

Rick, the subject of this drawing, is probably the most drawn person on Sktchy.  This is number 1,830!  Rick just has a super interesting face, makes great expressions, and enjoys dressing in various costumes for inspiration photos.  Here he is made up to resemble Kratos from the God of War video game.

I’m having fun with the red ink this week.

This Inktober drawing is a vampiress from Sktchy.   My Inktober drawings this week will have red ink in addition to the black and grey.  This is the first of five.  Things started melting a bit in the mouth because the grey and red are water soluble.  I had to just let it be instead of trying to correct.  It works for me, though.

Oh!  This is exciting.  There is a shop in Houston that sells art, crafts, jewelry, housewares, etc. by local artists and they announced an Inktober exhibition and party at the end of the month and I am one of the selected artists!  Last year I did all my Inktober drawings in sketchbooks.  This year I chose to do them all on separate papers with the hope that some of them could have a life outside of books on a shelf.  A good choice, I think.  It’s pretty cool to see them all together on the wall.

Ink, 8″ x 10″

This Inktober drawing was inspired by a costume designer on Sktchy.  So strange and freaky, and so fun to do.

That’s all the Inktobers for this week, as I take the weekends off.  Next week I have 5 planned that will all include red ink as well as black.  I’m looking forward to it.

I almost forgot to post my drawing!  I was laying in bed and couldn’t sleep and realized it.  This is another Sktchy inspired portrait.  The photo is so strange- I’ve been fascinated by it for a while.  The mask was fun to draw.  I used my thumb to tap the ink and make texture, or smudge to make a dark gradient.  The dress was another story.  Suggesting white lace is a real challenge with black ink.

“No more candy for you, little skeleton.”

Hard to tell if this little one is throwing a fit or showing what a scary skeleton they can be.  It was fun to draw and made me laugh a couple times in process.  Challenging also trying to balance some spooky Inktober action with the cute kid factor.

Ink and white-out, 8″ x 10″

More Inktober madness, inspired by Sktchy.  I got carried away with the spatter and had to rescue it with my trusty white-out pen.  That headdress was super fun to do.

I have decided to not do Inktober on the weekend.  I’m short 2 days since I’ve done 5 drawings and today is the 7th.  Yes, math skills for the win.  Being behind was stressing me out earlier today and you know, it’s not worth being stressed out about a self-imposed drawing challenge.   So expect a post every weekday in October, and if any happen on the weekend it’s a bonus.  My revised goal is to complete 23.

Tomorrow will be one of very few days where I use the prompts.  The prompt tomorrow is “star”.
