Mudville Flats, San Diego

I am back in Texas now, and mowing the backyard this morning I sorely missed the cool California weather. Our first couple of days of family vacation in California we spent in San Diego and we stayed at a great little hotel called Mudville Flats in the East Village, Gaslamp district. Above is a drawing I did on our back porch while having my morning coffee.

Our room was on the second floor and we had access to a deck out back overlooking the beautiful backyards of the neighbors and a nice view of some interesting newer townhouses. We had breakfast on the deck each morning and I went out there early for quiet morning drawing time.

I highly recommend Mudville Flats to any reader traveling to San Diego. I’m not sure if it was originally built as a house or apartments back in 1905, but today it is 4 units, with the owners (who are super nice and accommodating!) living in the 4th. They did a great job restoring the building- just a really cool place to be. Gorgeous. The neighborhood is filled with great shops and places to eat, and is just a few blocks from the marina, the Maritime History Museum, and the awesome Midway museum. Funny, I didn’t start out intending to write a hotel review, but there it is!

There are a couple more drawings from the trip that I’ll scan and post later. I intended to do more, but that’s ok. We had a great trip.

  1. Always love quick, scratchy sketches like this, though I’m sure that if I saw the actual building, then it’s pretty much well captured by the sketch.
